Alphabet and Tesla report as the first two of the megacap cohort, with IBM alongside them. The tape is pricing a single question, and it is not about this quarter's earnings per share.
The question is whether AI monetization justifies AI capital spending. Alphabet's capex is expected to reach roughly $262 billion in 2027 — approximately three times its 2025 level — according to consensus estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Google Cloud revenue is expected to grow nearly 65 percent year over year to about $22.4 billion. Those two numbers sit on opposite sides of the same equation, and the market wants to know whether the second can eventually justify the first.
As one strategist framed it this morning, Alphabet is not merely reporting its own results; it is reporting on the health of the entire AI investment cycle. If management sounds less committed to the buildout, the market will not simply punish Google — it will question the durability of the buildout everywhere.
The Morning's Warning Shot
Before the open, a smaller company delivered a data point on the demand side of that equation, and it was not encouraging.
Pegasystems reported second-quarter adjusted earnings of $0.35 per share against a $0.43 consensus, with revenue of $420.7 million missing an estimate near $427 million despite growing 9 percent year over year. The stock fell 15 to 17 percent pre-market, on track for its worst session in nearly two and a half years, and Citizens downgraded it from Market Outperform to Market Perform while eliminating its price target entirely.
The stated reason is what matters. Management attributed the shortfall to unprecedented changes in the AI market causing enterprise customers to delay purchasing decisions, and warned the effect could persist through the remainder of 2026. The evidence is in the contract data: annual contract value growth slowed to 6 percent for the six months ended June 30, against 16 percent in the same period a year earlier. Total ACV of $1.62 billion came in below the roughly $1.66 billion expected.
Critically, this is not an isolated complaint. Pegasystems' language closely echoes IBM's surprise preliminary update on July 14, which flagged the same pattern of customer spending delays — and IBM reports tonight, alongside Alphabet. The Distinction Most Coverage Will Miss
It is tempting to read the Pegasystems miss as evidence that the AI trade is breaking. That reading conflates two layers that are behaving in opposite directions.
The infrastructure layer — chips, servers, data centers, cloud capacity — is where the capital is going. Spending there is enormous and, based on hyperscaler guidance, still accelerating. The adoption layer — enterprise software that companies buy to actually use AI in their operations — is where Pegasystems and IBM live, and it is where purchase decisions are being postponed.
Those are not contradictory observations. They are the same phenomenon viewed from opposite ends. Enterprise buyers looking at a rapidly changing AI landscape are doing what buyers rationally do amid uncertainty: waiting. Waiting to see which vendors survive, which architectures win, whether the tool they buy this quarter is obsolete next quarter. That hesitation is a headwind for anyone selling enterprise software today and has no immediate effect on the hyperscalers building capacity for the next decade.
The uncomfortable implication is that the buildout and the payback are running on different clocks. Capital is being committed now against revenue that requires enterprise adoption — and enterprise adoption is currently slowing because of the pace of change the buildout is producing. Alphabet sits precisely at that intersection: spending like the infrastructure layer, needing to be paid like the adoption layer.
Deferred or Destroyed
The framing that matters was put well by an Evercore ISI analyst considering IBM's warning: how much of the demand lost in the June quarter gets recovered in the second half, rather than being destroyed?
That is the entire question, and the two answers have very different consequences. Deferred demand is a timing problem — customers pause, resolve their uncertainty, and buy later, which means a weak quarter is followed by a catch-up quarter and the trend is intact. Destroyed demand means the purchase never happens: the customer decides the category has changed, builds internally, waits for a different architecture, or concludes the spend was never necessary. Same weak quarter, entirely different forward curve.
Nothing in today's reports will settle this. What management says about pipeline, deal timing, and whether delayed contracts have closed since quarter-end is the actual signal, and it will be found on the calls rather than in the headline numbers. Why This Is a Beat-and-Fade Setup Regardless
The recent pattern in this earnings season has been consistent and it argues against reading a strong headline as a green light.
Taiwan Semiconductor posted a record quarter, beat on nearly every line, raised its full-year outlook — and fell, because it guided capital expenditure higher and flagged margin dilution. GE Aerospace beat and raised guidance and traded lower. Netflix delivered in-line results and was punished for a soft forward revenue guide. Across the season, a large majority of reporting companies have exceeded earnings estimates, and the market has sold a great many of them anyway.
The consistent explanation is that beats are not the issue; guidance and capital spending are. Alphabet arrives into that pattern carrying the single largest capex line in the group. A quarter that beats while capex guidance climbs is not obviously a bullish outcome in this tape — that specific combination is precisely what took TSMC down.
The inverse is equally possible. Management sounding cautious on the buildout would relieve the spending concern while confirming the demand concern, which is the outcome that reprices the whole complex rather than one stock. There is no configuration of tonight's report that is unambiguously good, which is a reasonable definition of a wide distribution.
The Backdrop

Brent crude has pushed above $95 as the conflict around the Strait of Hormuz continues, a sharp move from the high $80s at the start of the week, which reintroduces an energy-cost input to an inflation picture that had been softening. Futures were lower into the open. And the concentration problem from earlier in the week persists: two megacaps reporting after the same close means a single overnight window carries multiple correlated gaps, in a complex where the names share a thesis rather than merely a sector.
